Serengeti

The Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania spans across the Mara and Arusha Regions, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometers of protected land, including the renowned Serengeti National Park and various game reserves. It is globally famous for hosting the world’s largest land animal migration, making it one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. Additionally, the Serengeti is renowned for its abundant lion population and offers exceptional opportunities for observing prides in their natural habitat. The region’s diverse habitats, including riverine forests, swamps, grasslands, and woodlands, support a remarkable diversity of wildlife, with approximately 70 large mammal and 500 bird species. Common sightings include blue wildebeest, gazelles, zebras, and buffalos. The Serengeti District of Tanzania is also located within this extraordinary ecosystem. While commonly believed to mean “endless plains” in the Maasai language, the exact etymology of the name “Serengeti” remains uncertain.
